A favicon is just one of those finishing details that make a blog look complete and polished.
It is simply the image that is beside your blogs name in your browsers tab window.
Necessary?
No not really.
Like I said, just a finishing detail.
As a matter of fact, I have gone years without one.
It was on my to-do list for many, many a-list.
And now I’ve added it (to most) of my blogs.
Wanna know how?
It was unbelievably simple once I found a (free) program that converted any photo into a icon.
My main caveat was that I did not want to have to download the program.
So, I went to our friend google and put in the search “make a favicon free”.
And the winner is…..
Simply upload the photo of your choice by clicking Browse.
After that, click on the Export button.
Choose a size (I recommend between 16 x 16 and 96 x 96. Bigger selections did not show up in the tab window despite atahualpa saying that the size could be up to 128 x 128.)
After choosing a size a making sure that you are under the ICON tab, click Save As.
Done.
Oh, wait. You want to know how to get it up on your blog?
I must begin by saying that I only know how to do it in atahualpa but I am assuming that the instructions cannot be too dissimilar for other themes.
You will need access to your ftp in order to complete the following steps.
I’ll be glad to link to other sites with theme specific or alternate method of installing an icon instructions.
Meanwhile, back at the ranch…
After logging into your ftp, follow the path to your theme.
/wp-content/themes/atahualpa.3.7.1/atahualpa
My theme has another folder called images
/wp-content/themes/atahualpa.3.7.1/atahualpa/images
And the final step is a folder entitled favicon
/wp-content/themes/atahualpa.3.7.1/atahualpa/images/favicon/
Upload your new .ico file into the folder (the file that you just created with ConvertIcon).
With atahualpa, you must come back to your dashboard.
Follow the path from Atahualpa Theme Options to Add a Favicon.
In the Favicon box, put the name of your .ico file.
(It is best if you match the capitalization of the file name exactly.)
Click Save and you are done.
As always, I attempted to give a thorough step by step.
If I missed any steps or you have any questions, feel free to leave them in the comment section.
