Briefly Unavailable for Scheduled Maintenance

Being a dutiful lil’ blog owner, anytime I log into one of my blogs, I always cede to the WordPress X.X.X is available! Please update now. message.

Today was not different.

Ok, actually it was…because my blog just vanished.

And in its place was the message Briefly Unavailable for Scheduled Maintenance. Check back in a minute.

Only minutes became hours. And hours became days.

Of course, I turned to my handy-dandy friend, Google, to help solve my problem and it was full of advice on saving my database, disabling plugins, etc….etc….etc…..especially on the WordPress board. (Far be it for them to admit that they made an oopsie right?)

Anywho, the solution was much…much…simpler than that and was found on an SEO Website called RazorLight Media.

My only problem is that the instructions were written for people more tech savvy than I am, so I thought I’d break it down for you so that you don’t have to spend a half an hour scratching your head like I did! You’re welcome. Lol.

If you want the whys, feel free to head on over to there blog.

Here’s what I did.

First, as instructed everywhere, I backed up (ie, copied) my database. This can be done in two ways.

1. Log in to your WordPress Blog. Under TOOLS click Export. Change the settings that you want to change and click DOWNLOAD. Save and Done.

2. Log into Webhost (for my purposes, that would be Dreamhost). Under the Dreamhost tab,  click Backup Your Account and then, well, backup your account. Wait for email.

After doing that for safety sake (I sure don’t want to lose all the months of hard work that I have already put into my blog, I proceeded to fix my more immediate problem.

Back logged into my webhost, I then took a lil’ stroll to my WebFTP.

Lo and behold there it was!

A file called .maintenance.

With fingers crossed and a prayer in my heart, I clicked the delete button!

And poof….problem solved.

Now, however, I’m scared to death to do the upgrade again.

I don’t know about you but I think I’ll wait until my nerves calm down.

  • Hello! I had a similar Problem when I update my blog. After all these problems, I found a very good plugin. It's called the "Core Control". I installed it on my blog, set it and forget about all the problems. I hope you can help my advice. Good luck!
